Bangladesh Navy
The Bangladesh Navy (BN) is the naval component of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, tracing its patriotic origins to the 1971 Liberation War, where naval commandos executed key operations like Operation Jackpot to cripple enemy logistical routes. Since then, the BN has undergone a massive modernization effort, known as Forces Goal 2030, transforming it into a credible three-dimensional force with surface ships, submarines, and a dedicated naval aviation wing, equipped with frigates, missile corvettes, maritime patrol aircraft, and two modern attack submarines. Its primary role is to ensure the maritime security of the nation’s vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the Bay of Bengal, protecting economic assets, safeguarding vital sea lines of communication, and countering transnational threats like piracy, illegal fishing, and smuggling. Beyond its defense mandate, the Navy serves as the nation’s front-line disaster management force, providing crucial humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) during frequent natural calamities, while also actively participating in UN peacekeeping operations and fostering regional stability through joint exercises and naval diplomacy, all in line with its resolute motto: “In War and Peace, Invincible at Sea.”
The Bangladesh Navy (BN) is the naval warfare branch of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, responsible for the defense and security of the country’s extensive maritime area, ports, and economic zones.
Here is an overview of the Bangladesh Navy:
Mission and Roles
The primary roles of the Bangladesh Navy are multifaceted, covering both wartime and peacetime duties:
- Defense: Protecting Bangladesh’s territorial integrity and maritime interests, including its 118,813 square kilometers of maritime territorial area and exclusive economic zone, from external threats.
- Maritime Security: Maintaining a presence in the Bay of Bengal for counter-terrorism, anti-piracy, anti-smuggling, and anti-poaching operations.
- Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief (HADR): Serving as a frontline disaster management force, providing aid and conducting search and rescue during natural calamities like cyclones and floods.
- International Engagement: Participating in global peacekeeping missions under the United Nations (UN), and engaging in naval diplomacy through goodwill visits and joint exercises.
- Blue Economy: Contributing to the security and development of the nation’s maritime economic activities.
History
- Origin: The Bangladesh Navy was officially created in July 1971 as part of the Bangladesh Forces during the Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan.9 Many Bengali officers and sailors of the Pakistan Navy defected to form the nascent navy.
- Initial Fleet: It started its journey with only a few small gun-boats and personnel, carrying out crucial guerrilla operations like “Operation Jackpot” to disrupt Pakistani supply lines through sea and river ports.
- Post-Independence: The acquisition of three former Royal Navy frigates in the mid-to-late 1970s (BNS Umar Farooq, BNS Ali Haider, and BNS Abu Bakr) laid the principal foundation for its modern fleet.11
- Forces Goal 2030: Since 2009, the navy has been undergoing a significant modernization program, aiming for a “credible three-dimensional navy” capable of operating on the surface, underwater, and in the air.
Current Fleet and Capabilities
The Bangladesh Navy has been modernizing its fleet and has a credible three-dimensional capability:
- Submarines: Operates two Ming-class (Type 035G) diesel-electric attack submarines, which were commissioned in 2017.
- Surface Combatants:
- Frigates: The fleet includes modern guided-missile frigates (such as modified Ulsan class and Type 053H3 class) and patrol frigates (such as Hamilton class high-endurance cutters).
- Corvettes: Operates stealth guided-missile corvettes (like the Type 056 Shadhinota class) and upgraded guided-missile corvettes (like the Castle class).
- Patrol Vessels and Fast Attack Craft: A number of Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), coastal patrol boats, and missile boats are in service for coastal defense and patrol duties.
- Naval Aviation: Established in 2011, the naval air wing operates Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA), such as the Dornier 228NG, and helicopters (like the AugustaWestland AW109) for reconnaissance and transport.
- Special Forces: The navy maintains a special operations force known as SWADS (Special Warfare Diving and Salvage).
